Sri Sri launches 'Volunteer for a Better India'

5th Dec 2012

An Initiative by The Art of Living with UN Agencies, NGOs & civil society

New Delhi, December 5, 2012: “Give one hour to the nation. The country has problems because good people are apathetic. Youth must take charge and Volunteer for Better India,” appealed Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, spiritual leader, humanitarian and founder of The Art of Living, at the curtain raiser of a national initiative - Volunteer for a Better India (VFABI).

The curtain-raiser to VFABI was held on December 5 on the occasion of the United Nations International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development in New Delhi and to also commemorate International Anti Corruption Day which falls on December 9.

VFABI aims to bring youth together to address the critical issues affecting India like HIV and AIDS, the declining child sex ratio, sexual and reproductive health and rights, various issues affecting youth, environmental sustainability, drug and substance abuse, inequality in education and entrepreneurial opportunities, corruption and child protection issues.

The initiative will also see participation from the UN agencies, NGOs, corporate sector, civil society, media, interfaith coalitions to discuss each stakeholder’s role in addressing corruption among other issues on the agenda.

Ms. Cristina Albertin, Representative for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for South Asia, delivered the opening address in tribute to the International Anti Corruption Day and the importance of youth involvement in fighting corruption. She said, “No country can yet claim to be free of corruption, but what we can work towards is creating a society that is aware, vigilant, stands up to corrupt practices and adopts zero tolerance towards it. A youth led initiative by The Art of Living is a powerful way to mobilize you, the young minds which create and stand for a better future for all in India.”

An open discussion followed with the youth on corruption to discuss actions to be taken at a personal and social level.

Ms. Frederika Meijer, Representative, India and Bhutan, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said, “Today we stand at the cross roads of time. The global challenges of the 21st century as well as those confronting India are unprecedented - both in magnitude and complexity. Our choices today will determine the contours of tomorrow. This freedom of choice lends itself to a certain responsibility. ‘Volunteer for a better India’ is a clear call to action to create a world where choices are not marred by compulsion; volunteerism not subsumed by apathy; and where the potential of every young person stands not thwarted but fulfilled.”

Heads of partner agencies including Mr. Roy Wadia, Executive Director, Heroes Project; Ms.Bindiya Nimala, Director, FPAI; Mr. Satyan Mishra, Co-Founder, DRISHTEE; Fr Philip Kuruvilla, Secretary, Indian Interfaith Coalition on HIV and AIDS & Coordinator for INERELA + (Asia Pacific); among others, also presented their perspective on the initiative.

The project in partnership with FPAI, UNODC, UNFPA, UNGCNI, UNICEF, UNMC, Heroes Project, DRISHTEE, INERELA + (Asia Pacific) - IICA, and APAC - VHS aims to create a new wave of volunteerism and advocacy to bring about an on-ground change and combat issues challenging society in a concerted effort towards nation building.

This initiative takes forward the ongoing work of The Art of Living which is involved in numerous humanitarian projects that include conflict resolution, disaster relief, sustainable rural development, women empowerment, prisoner rehabilitation, education for all, and environmental sustainability.

Rahul Gandhi's business partner running for cover!

According to documents released by Dr. Subramanian Swamy yesterday, Backops Services Pvt. Ltd was registered on May 27, 2002 by Rahul Gandhi. This company appointed a US citizen Ulrik R McKnight as its Director in 2005.

But Ulrik McKnight claims, in his profile at the bottom of a column he recently wrote on a website, that he “co-founded and ran BackOps Engineering”. (Screenshot 1 from Google cache). Strangely Ulrik R McKnight profile has now removed the claim “co-founded and ran BackOps Engineering”. (Screenshot 2 from today)

The day Sadhus demanding ban on cow-slaughter were killed outside Parliament

Promila Kalhan

Being a devout Hindu, Gulzarilal Nanda had strong views on cow slaughter. Some states had done away with it, but not all. Nanda raised the proposal to ban cow slaughter with various chief ministers. For the protection of the cow, Nanda felt that if the breed of cow could be improved and it gave larger quantities of milk, then the cow's owner should not mind giving it protection after it went dry during the last part of its life. There were quite a few people who felt strongly about banning cow slaughter. In a note some months after an agitation against cow slaughter started Nanda gave the following details:

'In Parliament there was keen interest which increased as the movement (against cow slaughter) developed. At one stage, more than 100 members of Parliament signed a statement in support of the agitation and the ban on cow slaughter and submitted it to the prime minister. A number of members of Parliament approached me frequently to expedite our action. They were all sympathetic to the purpose of the agitation. The matter came up for consideration in the executive committee of the parliamentary party more than once. At the meeting a resolution was adopted which favoured a complete ban throughout the country.

'Meanwhile, the matter was taken before the working committee. I was asked by the committee to deal with the matter in Parliament and make a statement. I told the committee that this was not my subject and therefore I was not prepared to make a statement. Moreover, I had certain strong views on the subject and therefore I was likely to go beyond what might be intended by the other. They insisted that I should handle it, but even then I refused. The decision was that whatever the Constitution permitted should be enforced in the other states also which has so far no legislation for the purpose.

'Knowing that some of the chief ministers had expressed their disinclination it was decided that these chief ministers might be called immediately by the prime minister and persuaded to accept the line adopted in the working committee. In terms of that decision I made a statement in Parliament on 4th November, 1966. There was a great deal of applause and general satisfaction expressed in relation to that statement.

'The period between the 4th and 7th of November, 1966, naturally is of crucial importance in this context. It was expected that the prime minister would call the chief ministers for consultation and secure their consent. I reminded her also once or twice but it appears that they failed to carry out this obligation. If this part of the assignment had been carried out on the lines recommended by the working committee, the incidents of 7th November might will have been avoided. In fact, the Goraksha Samiti people told me that if I were to succeed in the efforts I was making there need not be any procession but there would be a thanksgiving meeting.

'On the 6th November, I summoned the meeting of the officers concerned at my residence to discuss the whole situation and the arrangements to be made in connection with the procession which had been announced. At that meeting, the lieutenant governor was present. Also the home secretary, officers of the Delhi administration, the inspector general of police and top personnel of the Intelligence Bureau were also present. It took us two hours to go through the business of this meeting. I asked all sorts of questions in connection with the arrangements and enquired about the route, whether it was a safe route. The answer given was that those responsible for the procession had agreed to such changes of the route as asked for.

'I had asked whether there was adequate police. I enquired whether they had made effective arrangements to prevent any persons coming too close to Parliament's precincts; whether any additional barriers needed to be placed. I also enquired as to how much reserve police they had got after making arrangements for their disposition at the time of the procession and at the end I asked them whether there was any information from any source about any element of mischief, or any trouble that might be apprehended in connection with the procession. They told me repeatedly that everything was normal, that they had no information at all of any kind of trouble developing on that date.

'On the 7th, I was naturally anxious to be in touch with what was happening but I was not able to get any regular reports. There were occasional telephone calls here and there. It appeared that the communication system just did not work properly. When I came to know that some trouble had arisen. I was naturally very anxious to get more precise information but it came only in very small bits.

'When I went to Parliament in the early afternoon, I went up to the northern gate of Parliament House across which the procession was held up. Before that I had seen smoke rising in the sky. I was told that it was occasioned by tear gas shells. I had some information that earlier some persons from outside had started smashing some doors of business houses and shops and were creating mischief. I intended to go into the crowd myself, but I was prevented to do so. I peered into the scene through the iron gate. I saw some Naga Sadhus shouting and moving up and down but there was nothing very serious at that point.

I came back to my office in Parliament House and received reports about arson and some firing and some deaths. There was a hurried meeting of some members of the Cabinet and after consultations I prepared a statement for the Lok Sabha. I read this out at the end of the day's business. My mind was full of the situation as naturally other people had expressed their sense of sorrow about the happenings. At the end, the prime minister asked me whether I would like to say something. I declined.

'When she left, I followed her to her office and told her that in view of what had transpired in the committee, I did not think I would be able to carry on with my duties although I do not think that the home minister can be blamed for what had happened and there was no failure of responsibility on the part of the ministry. She then told me that I should not do anything in haste and that she would like to consider the matter the next day.'

Nanda was dropped as home minister. Being an honest man himself and keen on anti-corruption measures, he evidently made quite a few enemies in the Congress party and the government. Quite a few of them were worried how they would be able to fight any elections in the future if they were prevented from raising funds from various sources.

Some people evidently allowed mischief makers, even perhaps goonda elements to become part of the procession consisting mainly of sadhus. These elements forced their way into the precincts of Parliament House. The police naturally took action. Also, it appears, some of the mischievous elements even forced their way into the house of the Congress president. The whole matter appears to have been engineered. Nanda's enemies won the day.

It was in the guise of sadhus that some mischief-makers were able to bring about violence which ultimately created a problem for the home ministry which Nanda had to leave.

The question is sometimes asked why was he so enamored of sadhus?

Nanda believed that real sadhus could help put people on the right path. The corrupt, for instance, could be punished but what was required was that corruption should be prevented and that could only happen by reforming the wrongdoers. His own association with the godly gave him strength. He wrote in a letter to a friend 'I believe in the efficacy of prayers as in instrument of personal transformation and a source of help to others in the same terms. To be near Anandmai (Anandamayee Ma), ever for a short while is a privilege of a high order. Divine grace gave me the opportunity of living and breathing for a period of eleven days in the blessed atmosphere around her at Dehradun. I have come back enriched and fortified.' The letter is dated July 16, 1976, around ten years after he stepped out of the home ministry.

- Kanji bhai,” mere hisaab se toh ek hi kaam karta hai dharam ya to woh insan ko bebas banata hai ya phir aatankwadi.”
- The hostess lauds him.

29. They show a conspiratorial telephonic conversation between the two main swamis, Liladhar Swami who is shown as scheming and Swami Siddheswar. (including the fasting one who is desperate for a solution) However, the tone is as if the main swamis are representing the entire Swami community.

30. There is however, one Swami who repeatedly warns these Swamis to accept people’s grievances and to sort themselves out.

31. In the Court Scene, “SIddheshwar Swami is asked by Kanji as to how many acres is his land on. Siddheshwar says, “22 acre mein,  jisme 322 chote chote mandir hain bhagwan ke.” To this Kanji says,”oh ho! Maane bhagwaan ka poora shopping mall hi sajaa ke rakha hai.”
There is subtle use of laughter of the people in the court to justify Kanji’s anti-hindu retort.

32. Kanji continues that he was asked by a priest working in Siddheswar Maharajs temple to offer milk to god to win the case and that he goes to the temple with milk. He says,”sab ke sab lota le kar khade the (implying as if people are waiting to defecate), maine socha andar koi doodh peene waala hoga, log aise gadhe thodi hain aise lota pakad ke khade hain, mera number aaya, main andar gaya…. Andar koi nahi tha doodh peene wala, koi nahi….beech main wooooh kala patthar pada hua  tha…..”
Priest angrily shouts,” use Shiv Ling kehte hain moorkh.”
Kanji,”haan shiv ling ,shiv ling pada hua tha… aur who “pathar” my Lord, woh patthar doodh doodh tha…..aur who patthar ke bilkul bagal mein se ek choti si patli se naali mein se saara doodh bahar ki aur ja raha tha. Maine bola ki bahar koi na koi khada hi hoga doodh peene wala, dekha bahar bhi koi nahi tha. Woh sara doodh My Lord us naali se nikal kar bahar gutter mein ja raha tha. Total waste.” Etc……….Toh mandir mein aane wala ek ek insaan who woh patthar pe doodh dalne ke bajaye kisi garib ke pet mein dale na to sabse jyada punya milega.” Applaud “aur haan maulvi sahib kisi dargah par phoolon ki chaddar chadhane ke bajaye kisi nange fakir ke badan pe kapdo ki chadar chadhaiye jaaye to Allah ko bahut khushi milegi. Aur Jesus ke samne mombatti jalane se acha hai kisi garib ke jhonpde mein jalayi toh uske ghar mein kabhi andhera nahi hoga.”

33. The other Swami says, “dekho kanji doodh chaddar mombatti yeh sab chadhana ek pratha hai. Bhagwan ki pooja archana …In sab ka moolya tum nahi samjhoge kyon ki tum ek nastik ho!”
Kanji asks him to stop these ill practices. However, the Swami is shown to have no modern understanding despite being a leading Swami in the country.

34. Another priest from Sai Baba panth in the audience supports Kanji.

35. Kanji asks the Siddheshwar Swami, why devotees going to Amarnath and Vaishno Devi die in bus crashes. He also says that every car that has accidents has pictures of God. Then why do they suffer such consequences. However, the lawyer of the opposite side (serving the insurance companies) objects and changes the topic. The debate is never taken forward!!

36. The lawyer asks Kanji to prove that the act is of God and that the Insurance companies are not liable anyhow. The priests object stating that if anyone calls matters,”acts of God” it does not make the priests liable. Kanji is asked by the judge to present proof supporting his case.

37. There is a song in which idolatory is derided and a muslim fakir begging is asked by kanji to work.

38. Kanji is asked by Krishna God to read Bhagwad Gita and then Bible and Koran.

39. Siddeswar Maharaj gets upset and says to Kanji, “tujhe narak mein bhi jagah nahi milegi.” Kanji laughs it off saying you have already put your “kulle” there so how will I get a chance to get in.

40. Siddheshwar maharaj gets upset and manhandles Kanji.

41. Kanji says,” In logon ki IQ bhi room temperature se low hai”

42. He quotes Gita, Bible and Koran to state that God has claimed that nothing moves without will.

43. The Insurance company officer and Siddheswar Maharaj have a fight and Maharaj threatens him, “hamara sampraday tumhe chodega nahi”.

44. Kanji meanwhile gets a stroke that renders him paralytic on the entire left side of his body.

45. Kanji is in his hospital ICU God Krishna visits him and heals him by running his keychain on his body and tells him he is in hospital since one month and that the Swami’s have made a god of him. Kanji asks God for forgiveness.

46. God shows himself to kanji dressed in a white dhoti and jewelry and tells him,” arre main usi roop mein aaya hoon jo aap log hamesha dekhte ho tv pe calendar pe, filmo mein. Barso se yehi roop mera chalta aa raha hai. Usi roop mein main apke saamne khada hoon.Lekin kanji bhai main aisa hoon nahi!” Insult to Indian ethnic clothes!!

47. Krishna says,”…….. mujhe logon ke phool, Prasad ya chadhawe, candle, chaadar, in sab se dilchaspi nahi hai. Main toh chahta hoon ki, yeh sab cheezein who garibon mein baant de. Mujhe agar lagav (attachment) hai toh unki shraddha se, unke pyar se, unki aastha se.”

48. Krishna shows him what all has happened in the past month when he was incapacitated in hospital. His friend has become a Swami and the other Swamis and politician want to make money off his shrine to recover the settlement cost that they had paid out to the people that had participated in the class action suit against all religious. Liladhar Swami says,” Waise bhi kaafi saalon se market main naya Bhagwan nahi aaya hai”. They conspire to kill him.

49. Kanji decides to go to the temple venue and face the conspirators. He carries a rod on his shoulder. Kanji addresses the crowd there,”……………..ek baat mujhe bataiye, hamari duniya itni sundar hai toh phir bhagwaan sirf mandiron mein hi rahenge? Main kehta hoon sirf yahan se (heart) se maniye. Apne dil se mangiye toh bhagwaan milega……Insaaan mein milega. Aise pattharon mein nahi milega. Aise pattharon mein nahi milega.”…….. He breaks his own idol.

50. When the public wants to attack the Swami’s. Kanji asks the public to let them go back in their expensive cars. He says, among other things”……..aur aaj ke baad inke ashram mein, ya inke dar darwaze pekoi bhi kadam nahi rakhega, samajh gaye. Who hogi inki asli sajaa.”

51. Liladhar Swami while leaving says, “yeh aastha, shraddha afeem ke nashe ki tarah hai kanji. Ek baar lat lag gayi na, aasani se nahi choot-ti. Yeh jo aap log dekh rahe ho na they are not god loving people, they are god fearing people. Aaj nahi to kal yeh Kahin phir se ashram mein na dikh jaayen. Mere bhai baba…..”

52. Kanji tells his friend,”kya Swamiji inke saath nahi jayenge. Chal aaja tod abhi”.

53. Kanji tells the crowd,”tum sab pratigya lo ki koi bhi aadmi kisi bhi dharamsthal ki daan peti mein ek bhi paisa nahi dega”.  He breaks down the donation box.”ab dekh kya rahe ho todo in putlon ko”.

54. They crowd brings down his statue.

55. God disappears but his key chain is on the ground. Kanji picks it up and tries to keep it in his pocket. There is an aakashwani,”kya kar raha hai kanji. Ise tabeej bana ke gale mein mat pehen-na. Badi mushkil se tu-ne logon ko samjhaya hai ki yeh sa galat hai. Phenk ise. Phenk.” Kanji throws the ring away in the sky with a flourish towards the temple.

Sri Sri speaks on 'Innocence of Muslims', the Anti-Islam film

Varying Hues Of Human Perception

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Human race is diverse, so too its cultures and belief systems. Though religion is born in a particular race and nation, it has cut across boundaries of race and nationality. Although religion has maintained its own identity, it could not remain immune to the cultural influence of host countries. It is interesting to note that what is considered blasphemy in one religion is considered a matter of pride in another. For example, in Hinduism, playing the role of prophets and saints is considered a privilege. Every year Ram Lila and Krishna Lila are played across India and innumerable people dress themselves up to play the parts of Sri Rama, Sri Krishna, Hanuman and others. In the Christian tradition as well, Nativity tableaus are performed and watched as a respectful tribute to Jesus. Many actors abstain from personal bad habits for the period of these roles. People even carry big crosses and retrace the steps of Jesus through the streets of Jerusalem to relive the crucifixion themselves. The basic concept is that when you imitate somebody, you imbibe their qualities.

By contrast, in Islam, imitating or playing such a role is considered blasphemy and an insult to the Prophet. In fact, music, sculpture, dance and painting were banned in puritanical Islam.

“The Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance.” Hadith Qudsi 19:5

“Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings….” (Musnad Ahmad & Abu Dawud Tayalisi)

Man cannot be without these expressions of art. Slowly, the influence of Hinduism gave birth to Sufism. Although it was banned in strictly orthodox Islam, music slowly found it way back into society, though the puritans object to this even today.

Interestingly, a parallel of this can be found in the Bhagwad Gita as well.

buddhya visuddhaya yukto
dhrtyatmanam niyamya ca
sabdadin visayams tyaktva
raga-dvesau vyudasya ca
  [Chapter 18, verse 51]

In the above verse and the few following it, Lord Krishna says that a seeker of Divinity should transcend all sensory objects like sound and sight. However, this is a practice for yogis for a period of time and not a lifestyle as such. While Hinduism, on the one hand, encourages music by calling it Naada Brahmn, on the other hand, it says that one has to transcend sound to reach Para Brahmn, the Ultimate Reality. These opposite values in Hinduism gave it a broad spectrum and they bring in a lot of tolerance.

While criticising, mimicking or accusing a politician is legal in some countries, in some others, it is an offence. The west takes pride in freedom of speech and allows people to express extreme opinions. However, in other places, such expressions can be an emotional assault on the sentiments of people. The outrage and violence that we saw recently says it all. What is appalling is that in the protests against the film Innocence Of Muslims, a large number of innocent muslims were killed.

In the end, it is we who attach meaning to an expression. Somewhere those who are very sensitive seem to lack sensibility and somewhere else people who are very sensible seem to lack sensitivity. What is needed is the perfect balance between sensitivity and sensibility in today's globalised society.

Teesta Setalvad received funds from HIVOS, Netherlands

Dutch fund Gujarat slander mills

Daily Pioneer, October 7, 2012

NGOs belonging to Teesta Setalvad, Shabnam Hashmi among recipients of Netherlands’ fund.

A Netherlands-based nongovernmental organisation is pumping in huge money in Gujarat-based NGOs and those from outside the State engaged mostly in Gujarat riots-related propaganda and litigation activities.

Humanistic Institute for Co-Operation with the Developing Countries (HIVOS) has given more than 13 lakh Euros (approximately `9.25 crore) to various NGOs in Gujarat between April 2008 and August 2012. The prominent among them are: DISHA (2,24,000 Euros), GKVP (2,07,000 Euros), SAFAR (1,84,000 Euros), MAHITI (1,04,000 Euros), SWATI (85,000 Euros), and UTHAN (63,000 Euros). DISHA belongs to Congress MP Madhusudan Mistry from Gujarat.

HIVOS has also funded various NGOs in Mumbai and Delhi. Mumbai-based Citizens for Justice & Peace (CJP), run by Teesta Setalvad, has got 10,000 Euros, and Delhi-based ANHAD, run by Shabnam Hashmi, 4,000 Euros. Both these NGOs are vehemently against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Shabnam Hashmi’s ANHAD got the 4,000 Euros for propagating democratic Rights & Freedom of expressions through dance, poetry and musical evenings in Gujarat. HIVOS has claimed that it “does not fund individuals”. However, a payment of `54,000 has been given to Mihir Desai directly in his name. Desai is the counsel of Setalvad and represents her in various courts.

In fact, in its agreement (dated 16/11/09), signed with CJP for the project “Documentation & Dissemination”, HIVOS has categorically mentioned that “the name and logo of HIVOS should be mentioned in all printed material, websites and publicity related to the project”.

The agreement was signed by Javed Anand, Setalvad’s husband, on behalf of CJP. Interestingly, the agreement has a very strange clause which states: “In principle, HIVOS requires the account to be held in the name of organisation with which the contract has been concluded. With mutual consent an exception may be and a different payee agreed upon.”

Moreover, although the project was titled “Documentation & Dissemination”, in the budget summary, more than 50% amount was earmarked for “fortnightly meetings/workshops in Gujarat, travel expenses of CJP secretary and establishment expenses at Ahmedabad”. This, sources said, indicates to HIVOS funding CJP for Gujarat-riots related issues.

The HIVOS has also routed funds through a Bangalore based Centre for the Study of Culture and Society (CSCS) for its pluralism programme focusing on two core themes: Human Rights, Pluralism and Rethinking the Secular State; and Faith and Diversity.

Under Human Rights, Pluralism and Rethinking the Secular State, the theme is “emerging challenges and dilemmas before human rights and secular interventions of civil society groups in countering the rapidly growing Hindutva majority fundamentalists and its various manifestations such as communalism and communal violence. Initiatives here include studies into the role of civil society in post-2002 Gujarat violence.”

Under Faith and Diversity, the theme is “(a) mapping of how questions of caste, class and gender are influencing transformation processes within Muslim identity formations in India. (b) What kind of civic spaces are emerging within the Muslim community in addressing the challenges posed by communal violence and demands of everyday peace and co-existence?”

The sustained interest shown by the HIVOS in Gujarat riots is evident from the fact that it has uploaded as many as 62 articles/reports on riot-related issues on its web portal.

The Netherlands-based NGO’s intentions in pumping in large funds in such NGOs and its interest in the various studies of Gujarat violence thus surely raise eyebrows.

My wives may be Hindu but my kids will always follow only Islam: Aamir Khan

Above: The flag of Islam

Question: Did you face any religious dilemma while you were married to a Hindu lady Reena Dutta and later on to Kiran Rao?

Aamir Khan: No, none whatsoever. We never practiced each other's religion neither did we force each other to do so. But, of course, I had made it very clear that my kids will always follow only Islamic religion.

Sri Sri rebuffs Zakir Naik.. How Shiva did not recognize his own son

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The stories in the Puranas contain many incredible and hard-to-believe occurences. But they should not be interpreted as a nursery rhyme. Their language is Shakespearean and laden with great depth and meaning. We need to interpret these stories with a very refined state of mind.

The story goes that Parvati created a boy out of dirt from her body and appointed him to guard the doorstep. The first question that comes is how could Parvati, the Goddess Herself, have so much dirt? Parvati symbolizes the triguna - sattva, rajas and tamas. The entire creation is made up of trigunas. The dosha or imperfections that originate out of the triguna is an obstruction for the functioning of Prakriti. That was the boy that Parvati created to stand guard at the door.

Shiva is Shuddha Chaitanya, pure consciousness. Like the sun does not recognize darkness and cuts through it, Shiva does not recognize dosha and slays the impurity. But Prakriti cannot stay without impurity. So Shiva replaces the dosha with the head of an elephant, which symbolizes knowledge. Through knowledge, all the doshas or obstructions of Prakriti can be taken care of. This is the spiritual and metaphysical meaning of Ganpati being slain. So worshipping Ganpati as the remover of obstacles and the giver of gyana, knowledge is the most amazing depiction of the nature of consciousness.

Going a step further, even this difference between Prakriti and Purusha is done away with. That is why, the Ganpati Upanishad says,

ajam nirvikalpam niraakaaram-ekam
niraanandam aanandam advaita poornam
param nirgunam nirvishesham nireeham
para brahma roopam ganesham bhajema

Ganesha is the only One unborn unmanifest Reality. He is nirvikalpa and advaita - the formless, undivided One. This is the play and display of consciousness within itself.

While Ganpati is certainly the nirakara Parabrahman, he is invoked and worshipped in the mud idol for a period of time for the joy of the devotees. Then the Ganpati is asked to merge back into our heart and the idol is immersed in water. This ritual is observed for the sake of devotees, not for the sake of Ganpati. He who is without form is invoked in a form and then his spirit is invoked back into one's heart as the idol is immersed.

Myths about industrial agriculture

Organic foods are not healthier or better for the environment - and they’re packed with pesticides, argued Rob Johnston in a recent article “The great organic myths”. Here is the counter view by Dr Vandana Shiva

Industrial agriculture is an inefficient and wasteful system which is chemical intensive, fossil fuel intensive and capital intensive. It destroys nature’s capital on the one hand and society’s capital on the other, by displacing small farms and destroying health. It uses 10 units of energy as input to produce one unit of energy as food.

This waste is amplified by anther factor often when animals are put in factory farms and fed grain, instead of grass in free range ecological systems, Rob Johnston celebrates these animal prisons as efficient, ignoring the fact that it takes 7 kg of grain to produce one kg of beef, 4kg of grain to produce 1 kg of pork and 2.4 kg of grain to produce 1 kg of chicken. The diversion of food grains to feed is a major contributor to world hunger. And the shadow acres to produce this grain are never counted. Europe uses seven times the area outside Europe to produce feed for its factory farms.

Targeting small farms

Small farms of the world provide 70% of the food, yet are being destroyed in the name of low “yields”. Some 88% of the food is consumed within the same eco-region or country where it is grown. Industrialisation and globalisation is the exception, not the norm. And where industrialisation has not destroyed small farms and local food economies, biodiversity and food are bringing sustenance to people.

The biodiversity of agriculture is being maintained by small farmers. As the ETC report states “peasants breed and nurture 40 livestock species and almost 8,000 breeds. Peasants also breed 5,000 domesticated crops and have donated more than 1.9 million plant varieties to the world’s gene banks. Peasant fishers harvest and protect more than 15,000 freshwater species. The work of peasants and pastoralists maintaining soil fertility is 18 times more valuable than the synthetic fertilizers provided by the seven largest corporations” (ETC Group, “Who Will Feed Us?”).

When this biodiversity rich food system is replaced by industrial mono-cultures, when food is commoditised, the result is hunger and malnutrition. Of the world’s 6.6 billion, one billion are not getting enough food, another billion might get enough calories but not enough nutrition, especially micro nutrients. Another 1.3 billion who are obese suffer the malnutrition of being condemned to artificially cheap, calorie-rich, nutrient-poor processed food.

Hunger by design

Half of the world’s population is a victim of structural hunger and food injustice in today’s dominant design for food. We have had hunger in the past, but it was caused by external factors - wars and natural disasters. It was localised in space and time. Today’s hunger is permanent and global. It is hunger by design. This does not mean that those who design the contemporary food systems intend to create hunger. It does mean that the creation of hunger is built into the corporate design of industrial production and globalised distribution of food.

The dominant myth of industrial agriculture is that it produces more food and is land saving. However, the more industrial agriculture spreads, the more hungry people we have. And the more industrial agriculture spreads, the more land is grabbed.

Productivity in industrial agriculture is measured in terms of “yield” per acre, not overall output. And the only input taken into account is labour, which is abundant, not natural resources which are scarce.

A resource hungry and resource destructive system of agriculture is not land saving, it is land demanding. That is why industrial agriculture is driving a massive planetary land grab. It is leading to the deforestation of the rain forests in the Amazon for soya and in Indonesia for palm oil. And it is fuelling a land grab in Africa, displacing pastoralists and peasants.

Industrial agriculture is responsible for 75% biodiversity erosion, 75% water destruction, 75% land degradation and 40% greenhouse gases. It is too heavy a burden on the planet. And as the 2,70,000 farmers suicides in India show, it is too heavy a burden on our farmers.

The toxics and poisons used in chemical farming are creating a health burden for our society. Remember Bhopal. Remember the endosulfan victims in Kerala. And remember Punjab’s cancer train.

A series of media reports have covered another study by a team led by Bravata, a senior affiliate with Stanford's Center for Health Policy, and Crystal Smith-Spangler, MD, MS, an instructor in the school's Division of General Medical Disciplines and a physician-investigator at VA Palo Alto Health Care System, did the most comprehensive meta-analysis to date of existing studies comparing organic and conventional foods. They did not find strong evidence that organic foods are more nutritious or carry fewer health risks than conventional alternatives, though consumption of organic foods can reduce the risk of pesticide exposure.”

This study can hardly be called the “most comprehensive meta analysis.” For their study, the researchers sifted through thousands of papers and identified 237 of the most relevant to analyse. This already exposes the bias. The biggest meta analysis on food and agriculture has been done by the United Nations as the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology (IAASTD).

Parading junk science

About 400 scientists from across the world worked for four years to analyse all publications on different approaches to agriculture, and concluded that chemical industrial agriculture is no longer an option, only ecological farming is. Yet the Stanford team presents itself as the most comprehensive study, and claims there are no health benefits from organic agriculture, even though there were no long-term studies of health outcomes of people consuming organic versus conventionally produced food; the duration of the studies involving human subjects ranged from two days to two years. Two days does not make a scientific study. No impact can be measured in a two-day study. This is junk science parading as science. One principle about food and health is that our food is as healthy as the soil on which it grows. And it is as deficient as the soils become with chemical farming.

Industrial chemical agriculture creates hunger and malnutrition by robbing crops of nutrients. Industrially produced food is nutritionally empty mass, loaded with chemicals and toxins. Nutrition in food comes from nutrients in the soil. Industrial agriculture, based on the NPK mentality of synthetic nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium based fertilisers leads to the depletion of vital micro nutrients and trace elements such as magnesium, zinc, calcium and iron.

David Thomas, a geologist-turned-nutritionist, discovered that between 1940 and 1991, vegetables had lost - on average - 24 percent of their magnesium, 46 percent of their calcium, 27 percent of their iron and no less than 76 percent of their copper (Ref :David Thomas 'A study on the mineral depletion of the foods available to us as a nation over the period 1940 to 1991'. Nutrition and Health 2003; 17: 85-115).

Carrots had lost 75 percent of their calcium, 46 percent of their iron and 75 percent of their copper. Potatoes had lost 30 percent of their magnesium, 35 percent calcium, 45 percent iron and 47 percent copper.

To get the same amount of nutrition people will need to eat much more food. The increase in “yields” of empty mass does not translate into more nutrition. In fact it is leading to malnutrition.

Poor nutrition

The IAASTD recognises that through an agro-ecological approach “agro-ecosystems of even the poorest societies have the potential through ecological agriculture and IPM to meet or significantly exceed yields produced by conventional methods, reduce the demand for land conversion for agriculture, restore ecosystem services (particularly water) reduce the use of and need for synthetic fertilisers derived from fossil fuels, and the use of harsh insecticides and herbicides.”

Our 25 years of experience at Navdanya shows that ecological, organic farming is the only way to produce food without harming the planet and people’s health. This is a trend that will grow, no matter how many pseudo-scientific stories are planted in the media by the industry.

US Ambassador Stevens raped, body dragged in Libya, will the moderate Khan trio, Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir condemn this continuing cycle of violence?

Does condemning this act make us right wingers? Where are the moderates in the Islamic community? Will they stand up and be counted? How many are they and where are they? Why are they not risking their lives for the sake of humanity?

Despite the brutal and agonizing violence hidden in the society and in the castes and divisions of the Christians, Hindus and Muslims, many countries and civilizations have increasingly upheld Human Values in their fight (whether violent or peaceful) for independence or social reforms.

However, the intolerance of the Islamic jihadis and their treatment of Kafirs has been inhuman and sickening at all times.

Whether the Jihadis were funded by the US in earlier decades or by the Saudis and Iran in the present times, the Muslims have to decide for themselves whether they want to go back to the Stone Age or not. If not, they have to fight with their own people and make them give up their destructive and retrograde utopian ideals. The moot question remains, "who are the role models in their community?"

Will the moderate Khan trio, Shahrukh, Salman and Aamir stand up and condemn this continuing cycle of violence?

The horrible attack and killings in the attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul comes to mind. The suffering of mankind from this fundamentalism, of the innocent children and women of the killers of this ambassador, now to face retribution, are a terrible reminder of this unending violence.

Mother Earth and we, her children, do not need to be condemned to another global war that is already being waged but threatens to blow out of proportions.

Justice Aftab Alam and Teesta Setalvad's perjury in Courts - A Conflict of Interest?

Shahrukh Alam is Justice Aftab Alam's daughter. She is part of the Core Team at PKP - India (Screenshot 1). PKP - India is actively engaged in propagating / disseminating materials from Sabrang Communications (Teesta Setalvad's Organization) and others (Screenshot 2). PKP - India's India Regional Team also includes Senior Lawyer Mihir Desai (Screenshot 3). Mihir Desai is Teesta Setalvad's lawyer for numerous Gujarat Riot cases.

Having said that, there is overwhelming evidence against Teesta Setalvad and many court cases have also been filed against her, demanding a probe into her deceit, lies and perjury. Have a look at: Evidence Against Teesta Setalvad.

So why doesn't Justice Aftab Alam order an investigation into Teesta Setalvad's deceit, lies and perjury? Is it because Teesta Setalvad's Gujarat Agenda is also being pursued by Justice Aftab Alam's daughter Shahrukh Alam? Isn't this conflict of interest as all Gujarat cases in the Supreme Court are heard by a bench which includes Shahrukh Alam's father Justice Aftab Alam?

Hinduism, the hidden inspiration behind Hollywood blockbusters

Matrix Trilogy and Yoga Vasistha

Anand Mathur

The core philosophy of Hollywood’s super hit trilogy “Matrix” is inspired by the philosophy of the ancient Indian text “Yoga Vasistha”. The Yoga Vasistha is the knowledge portion of the Ramayana just like The Bhagwad Gita is the knowledge portion of the “Itihas” Mahabharata.

Yoga Vasistha is a discussion between “The One” – Rama with Sage Vasistha. In it Vasistha explains the nature and reasons of Creation, of its Existence and Dissolution. It explains the indivisible relationship of the individual to the Cosmos.

There are several similarities between the text and the movie. Let us examine some of them below.

The meeting of the “ONE” – Neo, with the child prodigy at The Oracle’s residence reminds one of the dialogues between the Prince Rama and Sage Vasistha. The child says “it is not the spoon that is bending….”. Vasistha tells Rama “the Universe is but an extension of that One Self, which is you.”

Similarly the Architect tells Neo that this was the 6th time this Matrix had been created and each time Neo has been the challenge, while in the Yoga Vasistha, Vasistha says “Rama this creation has been re-created for the 76th time exactly the same way albeit with minor changes and you have been born as Lord Rama the 76th time”!!! Reminds one of the quaint statement of the Architect, “this time the experience is far more specific.”

Similarly The Frenchman tells Neo that they both have been here before and he has had the better of him each time! His speech on cause and effect are lectures on the theory of Karma.

The dialogue between Neo and Morpheus during the former’s training in the simulated Matrix is familiar too. Morpheus repeatedly exhorts Neo to overcome the conditioning of his mind in the imaginary Matrix leading Neo to perform extraordinary feats such as flying, dodging bullets, bringing Trinity to life and even stopping the machines outside the matrix!

Similarly in Yoga Vasistha, Vasistha explains to Rama that the Creation is nothing but imagination. He narrates several stories to drive home his point wherein the protagonists have created entire Universes and cities in their minds and perform extra-ordinary feats even while experiencing pain and pleasure therein! Ironically Morpheus is Neo’s teacher but only Neo is destined to break the mould, to be the One, just like Rama.

Neo gets flashes of what he has to do in the future to stop Mr. Smith and the war. The Architect tells Neo, “but we know what you will do.” The Oracle asks him, “You dream of it don’t you?” Similarly Vasistha tells Rama that the future is known; that there is no choice but to do what one will be impelled to do. He tells Rama that it is his destiny to fight Ravana and to destroy him in battle.

Neo masters his mind becoming the chosen One. It is the concept of Avatar in India. He becomes one with nature within and without the Matrix, mastering it by merging his consciousness in it. Similarly Rama too understands the Unity in the Cosmos and rejoins with his pristine ancient consciousness thereby becoming the Avatar that Vasistha has already told him he is.

Finally we should discuss the scene where Neo is blinded by Mr. Smith but can see all objects and people in golden forms. This is the classical description of the Hiranyagarbha, The Golden Cosmic Egg, in ancient Indian texts including Yoga Vasistha. This golden material is the substratum of the Cosmos, the ultimate and unbroken particle; Neo uses his complete Oneness with the Universe before the final battle to his advantage.

Introduction of characters with Indian names like Sita etc and their discussion with Neo on Karma in Matrix Reloaded also show a strong Indian influence. The chanting at the beginning of the credits of the third part, i.e. Matrix Revolutions is the ancient Indian Sanskrit salutation to the Guru…

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय ।
ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥

From darkness to light.
From death to immortality.

Islamisation of Indian Judiciary

Anand Mathur

When a respected Judge and Lokayukta writes to the Chief Justice of India to remove a judge from a bench because of his “communal mindset” it is a matter the nation should sit up and take note of.

Retired Gujarat High Court Judge and former Gujarat Lokayukta, Justice S.M. Soni, in a letter dated 27th June, 2012 wrote to the Chief Justice of India that the “communal mindset” Justice Aftab Alam should be kept away from Gujarat cases in the Supreme Court!

Justice Soni was forced to write this on the basis of speeches made by the Justice Alam in a forum abroad and on the basis of an article contributed by the latter to a leading international think tank. In the speech and article Justice Alam raised objections on certain decisions of Supreme Court benches alleging that their decisions have undermined the constitutional rights accorded to minorities!

Recently the Delhi High Court allowed a minor girl of 15 years to be married to a man based on Mohameddan Law. Pertinent questions of the physical, mental or emotional ability of a child that age to live in a marriage were not raised but the supremacy of Mohameddan Law was accepted; that this decision may have compromised the child’s rights and the protection accorded to her by the Constitution as a minor citizen are yet to be established in a higher court.

In another case our secular nation could not get a stay order on Mamta Banerjee’s controversial decision to give honorarium to 30,000 - 40,000 West Bengal Imams and Muezzins of Mosques in the High Court of Calcutta. In a bizarre unconstitutional act of ultimate minority appeasement her government announced a community specific hand-out of tax payers’ hard earned money!

The Supreme Court has also recently directed the Centre to totally phase out the Haj subsidy in 10 years, holding that there was no provision in the Holy Quran for undertaking visits to Mecca at the expense of the government or others. It had also expressed its reservations over the discretionary VIP quotas that were later cut down drastically by the same court too!

Judgments of higher courts have repeatedly established that our secular nation’s Constitution and the principles of governance enshrined in it cannot solely be based on what is mentioned in religious texts. It gives precedence to individual liberties enshrined in the fundamental rights. Nevertheless it allows certain cultural and religious freedom and protection thereof in a very dynamic way. Thus, whether the religio-cultural rights guaranteed to any community can be read in a fashion where the Sharia or the Quran can be the final source of Judgment is questionable. It is shocking that religious considerations can subvert sympathetic acts of a government, thereby allowing religious organizations and religious leaders to usurp the powers and privileges of the polity, executive and judiciary.

The few cases above show a dangerous trend in the judiciary that is tending towards Islamisation of the rules of governance for the Muslim population thereby usurping the Individual rights of the Muslim people that are citizens of this Secular country. In the long run, it is far more dangerous than accusations of judicial activism hurled at the courts.

The Shah Bano episode was a blot on the expression of modernity of our nation, yet at that time the entire nation took note of this controversy and condemned it as a retrograde step and an anti-women act. However, the case of the 15 year old Muslim girl being declared eligible for marriage has not woken up a single feminist organisation or the media to take up the cudgels to protect thousands of innocent lives from being destroyed by Fundamentalist forces that threaten to take our country back to the stone ages.

Meanwhile political parties continue to shamelessly pander to the Muslim vote bank, relegating millions of innocent people into the permanent clutches of a retrograde brand of Islam, poverty and vulnerability to radicalization. The Islamic seminarians have a stranglehold on millions of poor people and misuse their faith in ruining their lives further for personal gains and to maintain their powerful position. Educated and prosperous people make informed choices on matters of faith.

Yet now some crooks are doing their best to storm the last bastion of democracy, the Judiciary.

Mamata Banerjee - Anarchist or Islamist?

Anand Mathur

Mamata Banerjee’s rule of Bengal has revealed her dark side to the public. The woman that was worshipped by the masses is now reviled and feared by them. It is a matter of time before the CPI (M) realizes her follies and capitalizes on them like Tarun Gogoi. I will explain how later.

Bengal regularly has its Mulayamesque moments these days. Her Government has illegally promised 3 cottahs of land and Rs. 2,500 per month honorarium to the Imams of 30,000 mosques of Bengal. She then followed it up with a Rs. 1,000 per month honorarium to the Muezzins of the mosques. Besides these unconstitutional acts she has used the backdoor to provide reservations to Muslims in government jobs.

Bengal is rife with communal riots these days but they go unreported due to media black-out. The fanatics among the Muslims have never had it better before. She is known to kow-tow to top Islamist zealots, known people with dubious backgrounds and ISI links and to assure them of her support in lieu of the blinkered minority community vote banks they control.

Due to her pressure the BSF is being forced to take a back-seat in protecting our borders from infiltration. During the last years of CPI (M) and Chidambaram’s tenure there was a measure of control regained on the eastern borders.

Again over the last few months she has had supporters of Hindu Samhati (a hindu action forum) beaten mercilessly and jailed, when they protested against police inaction in riot hit areas. She has tried to stop their legal protests and her government has faced humiliation in the court for its ham handedness and illegal moves against the organization.

Hundreds of homes of the majority community and places of religious worship have been burnt and desecrated without any action from the administration.

Rapes and kidnappings of majority community girls and women are common and the names of the alleged perpetrators of these crimes sound like they are from a specific minority community. However, these criminals are protected by their community leaders under contorted Islamist policies and intolerance of diversity.

“Majority” community homes and lands are encroached upon with audacity and tenants eliminated. The administration does not react due to their fear of Mamata’s blatant interference. Mosques regularly mushroom next to temples with the sole purpose of disrupting the peace of the area. It is an open secret that Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia are funding these mosques spectacularly to spread their poisonous version of religious bigotry. In a move that defies belief she has agreed to recognize thousands of such Madrasas!

The recent episode of rioting after a local newspaper made a gaffe shocked the complacent Hindus of Kolkata too.

Despite this the left remains crippled and unable to capitalize on the situation. The truth is that the so called “seculars” and the “Hindu right wingers” are unanimous in their feelings of disgust about the blatant appeasements of Islamists.

The Assamese people united to vote Tarun Gogoi to power and the BJP lost several seats when he took the correct administrative stand.

The CPI (M) should realize the same. Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharaya was already pro-Industry and had its support unlike Mamata who has alienated all. CPI (M) should not shy from a confrontation with the Islamists. All secular and Hindu votes will automatically consolidate in their favour.

Nevertheless, Mamata Banerjee remains blinkered about what the people want and how to go about it. She recently did announce a grant and autonomy for Ramakrishna Mission to shore up her sagging image but then she continues to swing her sword in the dark with dangerous motivations.
